Call for Independent Inquiry: What Happened to Ubayd Haider?

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called for an urgent independent investigation into the tragic death of Ubayd Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, and the operations of the Boxing Commission. In a statement, Seruiratu emphasized the dangers present in boxing as a sport, asserting that all necessary measures must be implemented to protect athletes.

He noted that, despite the Boxing Commission Federation (BCF) launching an investigation after Ubayd was left in a coma, this was insufficient. “What we need is an independent inquiry—not just to explore the events leading to his death but also to review the operational and safety protocols of the BCF,” he stated.

Concerns were raised regarding reports of epinephrine and needles found in the warm-up area, which Seruiratu insisted warranted thorough examination. He expressed that the Commission has a responsibility to Ubayd, his family, and the broader sporting community to ensure that all safety protocols were adhered to and that a comprehensive examination is conducted.

“An independent inquiry is essential to uncover the truth, hold accountable those responsible for this tragedy, and ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future,” he concluded.

This call for transparency and accountability highlights the importance of safety in sports. It reinforces the sentiment that no event, regardless of its nature, should overshadow the need for athlete protection and the rigorous enforcement of safety standards. It is a crucial moment for the sporting community to come together to ensure that this type of incident is prevented in the future, fostering a safer environment for all athletes.
