Opposition Member of Parliament Virendra Lal has advocated for a ban on ferris wheel rides in Fiji following a recent accident involving the attraction at the Wairiki 7s event. Lal expressed his deep concern regarding significant failings in supervision by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department, stating, “Our amusement rides are not safe, and quite clearly, the OHS department is sleeping on the job.”

He emphasized the need to enhance the legislation surrounding amusement rides to ensure they are safe and prevent injuries or worse outcomes for patrons. Mr. Lal asserted that now is the appropriate time for authorities to take decisive action and eliminate these unsafe rides from public events.

This call for heightened safety measures serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining rigorous oversight for amusement attractions to protect public safety. Stricter regulations could lead to safer, more enjoyable experiences for families and individuals who wish to partake in such leisure activities.

In summary, the call for a ban reflects a growing concern for safety in public amusement settings, highlighting the need for improved regulatory frameworks to prevent future incidents and ensure the well-being of citizens. By prioritizing safety, Fiji can work towards providing secure recreational environments for all.
