Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji, has called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, criticizing the government’s failure to advance the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Narube highlighted that since Rabuka took office in December 2022, there have been multiple missteps, with the failure of this particular bill being notably embarrassing.
Narube asserted that the Prime Minister must take full responsibility for this error rather than attempting to attribute blame elsewhere. He stressed the importance of securing adequate support before presenting significant motions in Parliament. Moreover, he reiterated his stance that amending the contentious 2013 Constitution should ideally occur through a legal challenge rather than parliamentary processes.
These comments resonate with Narube’s previous remarks on the importance of political trust and integrity of leadership. He has previously emphasized the need for government officials to focus on restoring credibility, rather than merely changing parties or leaders. As concerns about factionalism within Rabuka’s administration linger, Narube urges voters to remain vigilant ahead of the 2026 elections, advising them to select leaders dedicated to genuine political accountability, economic progress, and uniting various communities in Fiji.
As Fiji confronts these political challenges, there is a glimmer of hope that increased public engagement and a push for accountable leadership could lead to a more transparent and effective governance structure. This situation illustrates the crucial role of civic involvement in shaping a government that prioritizes the interests of its citizens.
