The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has called for the resignation of Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, criticizing his leadership style as inappropriate for Fiji’s evolving democracy. This demand follows accusations of racist remarks directed at Opposition parliamentarian Aliki Bia during a parliamentary session on September 6.
The FWCC condemned Ratu Naiqama for downplaying the experiences of those affected by the enduring legacies of slavery and racism in Fiji. They stated that leaders and authorities must actively combat hate speech, as it can lead to hate crimes.
During the parliamentary session, Mr. Bia addressed the struggles of the Melanesian community in Fiji, asserting that they have long sought justice for past grievances. He expressed that the community continues to endure trauma from historical injustices.
Ratu Naiqama, speaking in iTaukei, responded to Mr. Bia’s comments by advising him to choose his words carefully. He claimed that many in the Melanesian community do not contribute adequately and questioned Mr. Bia’s claims of mistreatment, stating that those of Melanesian descent are already part of the societal fabric and have representation in Parliament.
The FWCC stated that Ratu Naiqama’s approach to leadership is not suitable in a nation that is striving for progress, particularly during a period when Fiji is initiating a Truth and Reconciliation process. They emphasized that leaders should set an example in combating racism and inequality.
The organization reiterated the importance of consistently speaking out against hate speech and toxic behaviors in society, rather than only addressing issues after tragedies occur.
