Call for Change: Fiji Medical Lab Institute Questions Overtime Payment Limits

The Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences is urging the Government to reconsider the recently approved overtime payments for Allied Health Band F positions within the Ministry of Health. In a statement, institute president Jignesh Sharma highlighted his appreciation for the ministry’s approval of these payments but raised concerns about limiting their availability to only six months.

According to an internal circular (number 17/2024) from the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the overtime payments will take effect on November 7, 2024, and last for just six months. Mr. Sharma argues that extending these payments indefinitely—or at the very least until the Ministry of Health and Medical Services can ensure sufficient staffing—would be more beneficial for the healthcare system.

He pointed out that many sub-divisional laboratories are understaffed, with larger facilities employing only three to four professionals and smaller ones often relying on just one or two. Mr. Sharma expressed concern that a temporary solution might not address the underlying issues faced by medical laboratory staff, and he questioned why a permanent resolution has not been pursued.

Mr. Sharma emphasized that to truly alleviate staffing challenges, the overtime payment issue must be resolved long-term, ensuring that staffing levels meet the demands of the facilities. He warned that failing to do so would have serious repercussions for medical laboratory teams, especially in sub-divisional areas.

This call to action could potentially lead to a more stable and efficient healthcare framework in Fiji, ultimately benefiting both medical professionals and the communities they serve. It’s an opportunity for the government to engage with healthcare providers and implement meaningful changes for the future.

Summary: The Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences is advocating for the extension of overtime payments for Allied Health Band F positions in the Ministry of Health, currently limited to six months. President Jignesh Sharma emphasizes the need for a permanent solution to staffing shortages in sub-divisional laboratories to ensure proper healthcare delivery.
