Former Fiji middleweight champion Jeremaia Tadu has urged the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to implement stricter safety measures for boxers in light of the recent tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. Haider collapsed after his fight against Runqi Zhou in Nadi on October 26, which concluded with a ninth-round technical knockout (TKO) in the IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title match.
Tadu expressed his sorrow over the incident, highlighting the need for greater scrutiny of referees in the boxing ring. He emphasized that referees should be vigilant in recognizing when a boxer is unable to defend themselves, advising that they should stop the fight if a boxer fails to respond after enduring multiple unanswered blows.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Tadu called on BCF directors to enforce stringent measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. He acknowledged that while an investigation is underway, it is essential for boxing promotions to continue, as many rely on the sport for their livelihoods. “The show must go on, but stronger rules need to be enforced for the safety of all involved,” he stated.
Tadu has a rich boxing history, having started his career in 1979, with a record of 87 fights comprising 73 wins, 7 draws, and 7 losses. Originally from Cicia in Lau, he moved to Viti Levu as part of a rugby team and later settled in Lautoka, where he began boxing. He trained under Bir Singh, a notable coach who has produced several champion boxers.
Additionally, Tadu celebrated his 70th birthday on November 2 at the South Seas Club in Lautoka, where he has been employed since 2010.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the inherent risks in the sport of boxing and highlights the urgent need for reforms to enhance athlete safety, ensuring that the spirit of the sport can continue while prioritizing the well-being of its participants. It is hopeful to see voices like Tadu’s advocating for necessary changes, which could lead to a safer environment for future boxers.
