Former Fiji middleweight champion Jeremaia Tadu has urged the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to implement stricter safety measures for boxers following the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. Haider passed away after collapsing in the ring following his fight against Runqi Zhou in Nadi on October 26, where he suffered a technical knockout in the ninth round during the International Boxing Organisation’s Asia Pacific featherweight title match.
Expressing his sorrow over the incident, Tadu emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of fighters. He criticized the refereeing during the match, suggesting that the referee failed to intervene when Haider was no longer able to defend himself, stating, “If the boxer does not reply after four or five punches have landed, then the ref should stop it.”
Tadu believes it is crucial for BCF directors to enforce tougher regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. He acknowledged that despite the ongoing investigations, boxing must continue as many individuals rely on the sport for their livelihoods. Tadu stressed that while the show must go on, stronger safety protocols are essential for the well-being of all participants.
With a rich boxing history, Tadu has fought in 87 matches since beginning his career in 1979, achieving 73 wins, 7 draws, and 7 losses. Originating from Cicia in Lau, he moved to Viti Levu with a rugby team and eventually settled in Lautoka, where he became part of the local boxing scene. Tadu has faced off against notable boxers such as Tevita Ravuravu and Matereti Valu during his illustrious career.
Recently celebrating his 70th birthday, Tadu remains an influential figure in the boxing community and continues to work at the South Seas Club in Lautoka, a role he has maintained since 2010.
