Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance the laws that govern amusement rides to ensure public safety and prevent injuries. His plea follows a recent incident involving a Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens, which raised significant concerns regarding the safety of these attractions.

Lal emphasized that it is crucial for authorities to take decisive action, suggesting a ban on unsafe rides until they can be proven safe. He called for the government to prioritize the protection of its citizens by enforcing strict safety standards, mandating that all amusement rides undergo regular inspections and maintenance.

He passionately stated, “The safety of our people is a priority that cannot be taken lightly; we do not want to witness more tragic accidents. Authorities need to act properly and shut down these rides until their safety is assured.” Lal highlighted that the recent incident serves as a clear warning regarding the dangers associated with outdated and poorly maintained amusement rides. Although there were no fatalities this time, it serves as a crucial reminder of the need for better safety protocols, especially given a previous tragic incident in 2023 at the Fiji Showcase where a young woman lost her life.

As the Shadow Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lal expressed deep concern over the apparent lack of oversight by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department. He specifically referred to an incident on August 1st, in which a malfunctioning ride posed a serious risk to a child, asserting that such lapses demand urgent attention.

Lal concluded by reinforcing that the safety of children must never be compromised and called for a reassessment of current safety measures, which he believes are insufficient and have allowed aging rides to remain operational.

This incident highlights the crucial need for reevaluation and improvement of safety legislation surrounding amusement rides, which could usher in a new era of stricter safety standards that protect the public. With increased attention to maintaining and inspecting rides, the government has an opportunity to prevent future tragedies and ensure a secure environment for families enjoying leisure activities.

In summary, Lal’s call to action serves as a significant reminder of the importance of safety in public amusement and could prompt necessary legislative reforms aimed at creating safer experiences for all.
