Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has strongly advocated for the removal of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali following serious allegations made against her by Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections. These allegations involve claims of abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.

Mr. Seruiratu emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency and public confidence in institutions, stating that Malimali should resign or be suspended pending an investigation. He noted, “This is the only way to ensure transparency and that the public has confidence in our institutions.”

He expressed concern about the implications of keeping someone in the role of the chief anti-corruption official amid such serious allegations. He highlighted that the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), responsible for appointing FICAC’s Commissioner, must take action to protect the integrity of both FICAC and the JSC. He warned that if the JSC fails to act, it could lead to further questions regarding its own credibility, potentially necessitating a deeper investigation into its affairs.

In light of these developments, there is a significant opportunity for reform within Fiji’s anti-corruption framework, potentially leading to enhanced accountability and integrity in public service. By addressing these allegations head-on, Fiji can pave the way toward a stronger and more transparent governance structure that the people deserve.

Summary:
Inia Seruiratu, Leader of the Opposition, calls for FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali’s resignation following serious allegations from the Supervisor of Elections related to abuse of office and intimidation. He stresses the need for transparency and accountability within public institutions.
