Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, has expressed significant concerns regarding the credibility of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) under the leadership of Commissioner Barbara Malimali. In an interview, he reiterated his call for the government to take immediate action to suspend Malimali, arguing that FICAC has lost public confidence and trust in its ability to effectively combat corruption.
Seruiratu also criticized the Chief Registrar’s response to former FICAC Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, deeming it inappropriate and disrespectful. He emphasized that all leaders, especially those appointed to critical constitutional positions, should exemplify high moral standards.
He concluded by stressing the need to restore faith in governmental institutions through strict adherence to the rule of law, and by ensuring that justice and accountability are upheld for everyone.
This ongoing dialogue about leadership integrity and accountability highlights a critical moment for Fiji. By addressing issues of misconduct and promoting leaders of high ethical standards, there is hope for a strengthened commitment to transparency and effective governance, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Fiji.
