Drug abuse, loitering, and crime are posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of residents in Nausori, prompting the need for a stronger and more coordinated response. This concern was underscored by Naisa Tuinaceva, member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Assistant Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, following a review of the Nausori Town Council’s Annual Report covering the years 2016–2018.

While an anti-drug stakeholders group has been formed, Tuinaceva insists that the council’s actions need to be bolder to effectively combat these issues. He highlighted the necessity of municipal policing measures to enhance public safety in areas that are high-risk. “Crime represents not just a legal problem but also a local governance responsibility,” he stated, calling for closer collaboration between municipal leaders and law enforcement agencies.

In line with these efforts, Tuinaceva proposed the implementation of targeted youth programs aimed at education, sports, and skills development. These initiatives are designed to divert young people from engaging in criminal activities, addressing one of the root causes of crime.

This call for action resonates with ongoing concerns regarding the challenges faced by the Nausori Town Council, as previous evaluations have similarly indicated rising crime rates and a need for improved infrastructure and community services. The committee’s findings revealed that areas such as urban growth management and disaster resilience also require urgent attention.

In light of these challenges, there remains a hopeful outlook for Nausori. By fostering collaboration between government entities, community members, and various stakeholders, there is potential for innovative solutions that can enhance living conditions and public safety. This proactive approach signifies a collective commitment to revitalizing the community, paving the way for a safer and more secure environment for all residents.
