Call for Accountability: What Went Wrong in Fiji’s Boxing Tragedy?

Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has urged Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru to investigate the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) following the tragic passing of boxer Ubayd Haider. In a conversation with SUNsports, Ramos expressed his concerns regarding the lack of an ambulance and the absence of drug testing during the fight that took place on October 26.

Ramos questioned the decision-making process that allowed the event to continue without meeting essential safety requirements. He emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that Saukuru should explore why the boxing permit was approved despite these critical oversights. His call for an investigation was echoed by Sydney-based trainer Lepani Wilson, who criticized the BCF for not taking responsibility and shifting blame.

Wilson, a former president of the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji, highlighted the thorough checks he conducted when approving fights, ensuring that all necessary protocols were followed before the event commencement.

In response, BCF chairman Adi Narayan clarified that the title fight was sanctioned by the International Boxing Organization (IBO), and his role involved merely endorsing the event as per protocol. He stated that he had communication with the promoter on the day of the fight, who assured him that all arrangements were in place.

While the incident has raised serious questions about the safety measures in place for boxing events, it serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of rigorous protocols to protect athletes. The hope moving forward is for the investigation to lead to improved safety standards in the sport, thereby preventing such tragedies from occurring in the future. The collective outcry from trainers and officials may catalyze necessary changes that prioritize the health and well-being of boxers.
