Despite the setback in the cup quarter-final, where the Cakaudrove team was narrowly defeated 7-10 by Waqavuka during the Fiji Sports Council under-20 7s rugby tournament, the team’s performance stood out in their inaugural participation in this competition.
Head coach Noa Taveiwaka expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the boys’ unwavering dedication and hard work in preparation for the tournament, particularly noting the significant challenges they overcame while traveling long distances to compete. Taveiwaka emphasized that most of the players were new to this level of competition, yet they showcased a genuine passion for rugby, which propelled them to give their best efforts on the field.
“Our preparations for the competition were tough, but I thank the boys for their heart and love for the sport that keeps them pushing forward,” Taveiwaka remarked. He also pointed out that while this was many players’ first tournament experience, it wasn’t their first time playing rugby, and he considered the competition to be highly beneficial.
The coach highlighted the significance of such tournaments, as they help bridge the gap between Kaji rugby and higher-tier competitions like the Deans, providing young athletes with essential experience and exposure. Taveiwaka extended his gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council and Fiji Rugby for supporting the development of young rugby talent and acknowledged the players’ progress through various competition levels.
This tournament serves not just as a competition, but as a stepping stone for the young Cakaudrove athletes, providing them with valuable lessons and experience that will contribute to their growth both on and off the field. The future looks promising for these players, as they continue to learn and develop their skills in rugby.
Overall, even in defeat, this experience presents a hopeful outlook for the team’s future endeavors, reinforcing their love for the sport and commitment to improving as they strive for greater achievements in upcoming competitions.
