A fire broke out on Monday at a crucial telecommunications data center in Cairo, resulting in injuries to at least 22 individuals, mostly due to smoke inhalation, according to the Egyptian health ministry. This incident caused widespread disruptions in communication services across the capital, with both phone calls and internet connectivity severely affected. Netblocks, an internet monitoring organization, reported that national connectivity had dropped to approximately 62% of typical levels.

The fire, which originated in one of the equipment rooms at the Ramses switchboard, was quickly contained, avoiding a spread to other parts of the building. The National Telecom Regulatory Authority stated that services would be restored shortly as a safety measure saw power to the entire building cut off. To aid those unable to reach emergency services, the health ministry provided alternative contact numbers for ambulance services across different regions.

A plume of smoke was visible over the Ramses district during the incident. Initial investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have been the cause of the fire. Fortunately, state TV reported that the situation had been stabilized without further escalation.
