Caines Jannif, a company rooted in vision and dedication, recently celebrated its remarkable 120th anniversary with a special dinner held at the Chili House on Brown Street, Suva, on February 26. This milestone gathering brought together employees, extended family members, and cherished friends, highlighting the deep bonds forged over the years within the Caines Jannif community.
The company’s journey began in 1904 when Fredrick Caines founded his photographic studio after taking over the Le Faivre Photographic Studio, renaming it Caine’s Studios. Under his leadership, the studio thrived until his health issues led him to step back in 1935, passing the reins to a partnership that included his wife, Hannif Akbar, and Ben Jannif.
The business faced its challenges, including a significant shift in 1953 when Mrs. Caine and Mr. Akbar departed the partnership. The involvement of Amina Jannif, the wife of Ben Jannif, ushered in an era of expansion and innovation, ultimately leading to the company’s transformation into what is known today as Caines Jannif. The legacy continued with Ikbal Jannif, Ben’s son, who ensured the company’s prominence in the photography industry.
During the anniversary dinner, Director Sofia Jannif expressed her joy at seeing past and present staff members gathered to celebrate. She mentioned a significant event, recalling that six years ago, the Raiwai Factory had suffered a fire. “Tonight is about celebrating,” she emphasized, inviting all to cherish their collective history.
Kelsey Jannif, one of the longest-serving employees, shared her experiences from 1975, detailing how the evolution of technology impacted the company and its services. She reflected on the shift from traditional methods of film processing to the faster, automated digital era, capturing the nostalgia associated with the art of photography.
The deep connection among employees contributed significantly to the company culture, described as treating each individual like family, which has fostered loyalty and dedication. Employee Yangtesh Reddy echoed this sentiment, underscoring the commitment to supporting the company’s needs.
Caines Jannif has had a profound influence on Fiji’s photographic history, documented significant national events, including the moment in 1970 when Fiji became independent. Their snapshots have helped to define Fiji’s identity, preserving the collective memory of the nation.
As Caines Jannif looks toward the future, the company is equipped with the legacy of its past and the strength of its familial bonds. The journey of Caines Jannif stands as a testament to resilience, innovation, and the enduring power of photography, ensuring that the beauty and narratives of Fiji continue to be captured for generations to come.
This anniversary is not only a reflection on the past but a hopeful celebration of the ongoing journey of creativity and community that Caines Jannif embodies.
