Cabinet Showdown: What’s Next for Lynda Tabuya?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided confirming whether any disciplinary measures would be taken against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, regarding her recent statements. Ms. Tabuya publicly suggested reinstating the death penalty as a deterrent for drug-related offenses, a topic that ideally should have been reviewed by the Cabinet prior to her remarks.

Earlier this week, Mr. Rabuka stated that the Cabinet would address the situation concerning Ms. Tabuya. She has gained a reputation for ignoring Cabinet protocols, leading to increasing calls for her removal from her ministerial role.

In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka indicated he did not want to make any premature judgments on the matter. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been dealt with,” he remarked, adding that he had not been in Fiji long enough to fully address it, noting that it was expected to be discussed by the Cabinet the previous day.

He expressed regret that Ms. Tabuya had expressed her opinions publicly before the Cabinet had the chance to discuss the matter.
