Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the Cabinet has approved the issuance of a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller, relating to the conversion of a previously closed road identified as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision marks the culmination of discussions dating back to the early 1970s when the government acquired land from the Miller family to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.
With the completion of the highway now realized, the necessity for the Closed Old Queens Road has diminished, allowing the government to revert this property to its previous tenure for appropriate future use. Rabuka emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to effective land management and honoring historical agreements while addressing the needs of the local community.
This development ties into broader infrastructure initiatives, notably the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which has an investment of FJD $300 million sourced from China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This project aims to enhance transportation networks that primarily benefit rural communities, thereby fostering local economic growth.
Rabuka underscored the significance of improving infrastructure in creating economic opportunities and empowering local communities. He pointed out that with each infrastructural enhancement, there is hope for elevated living standards, particularly in rural areas. The government’s ongoing investments suggest a promising trajectory towards sustainable economic growth and community empowerment.
In summary, the approval of the State Grant not only signifies a strategic advancement in land management but also reinforces the government’s focus on infrastructure development. As these initiatives unfold, they present a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s rural communities, signifying a commitment to enhancing quality of life through deliberate infrastructure enhancements.
