Cabinet Crisis: Will Lynda Tabuya Face Consequences?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has avoided directly answering whether any disciplinary measures would be taken against Women’s Minister Lynda Tabuya for her insubordination. Tabuya recently made public comments regarding the reintroduction of the death penalty as a deterrent against drug trafficking in Fiji, an issue that ideally should have been considered by the Cabinet first.

Earlier this week, Rabuka mentioned that the Cabinet would address Tabuya’s actions. The minister is known for breaching Cabinet protocols, resulting in increased calls for her removal from office. In a recent interview, Rabuka stated that he did not wish to prematurely judge the situation.

“The issue regarding Lynda Tabuya has yet to be addressed,” he remarked. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to handle this matter. It was meant to be discussed by the Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday).” He emphasized that it was regrettable that Tabuya expressed her opinions before the Cabinet had the opportunity to deliberate.
