Cabinet Controversy: Will Minister Tabuya Face Consequences?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has avoided confirming whether any measures will be taken against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, regarding her recent comments that some have deemed insubordinate. Tabuya suggested reintroducing the death penalty as a means to deter drug criminals who use Fiji for drug trafficking, a topic which should have been reserved for Cabinet discussions.

Earlier in the week, Rabuka indicated that the Cabinet would address Tabuya’s actions. Her history of publicly disregarding Cabinet protocols has resulted in increasing calls for her dismissal from her ministerial position.

In a recent interview, Rabuka stated that he did not wish to jump to conclusions about the situation. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been handled yet,” he remarked. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to tackle this matter. It was supposed to be discussed by the Cabinet yesterday.”

Rabuka emphasized the unfortunate nature of Tabuya expressing her opinions publicly before any official Cabinet discussions took place.
