Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the Cabinet’s approval to issue a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller, allowing for the conversion of a previously closed road linked to the land designated as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision stems from historical discussions dating back to the early 1970s, when the government acquired this land to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.
With the highway now operational, Rabuka stated that the justification for maintaining the Closed Old Queens Road has diminished, prompting the government to revert the land to its former tenure, thus allowing it to be utilized for its rightful purpose. This initiative not only demonstrates the government’s commitment to effective land management but also reflects its dedication to fulfilling historical agreements while addressing contemporary community needs.
The approval aligns with significant infrastructure projects throughout Fiji, particularly the ambitious Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which involves a substantial investment of FJD $300 million, funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This project is designed to enhance transport networks that will primarily benefit rural communities and promote local economic growth.
Rabuka emphasized that improving infrastructure goes beyond mere construction; it is about creating economic opportunities and empowering local communities. His administration believes these infrastructural improvements can lead to better livelihoods for residents in rural areas, providing a promising outlook for their future.
In summary, the issuance of the State Grant reflects a progressive step towards effective land management and reaffirms the government’s commitment to developing infrastructure. As these initiatives progress, they hold significant promise for uplifting rural communities, enhancing economic prospects, and fostering a brighter future for the people of Fiji.
