C.O.I Faces Legal Hurdles in Boxing Inquiry

The Commission of Inquiry (C.O.I) is currently facing challenges in its investigation into the death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. This update was shared by C.O.I chairman Edwin Wainiqolo during a press conference held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Nadi. The difficulties have arisen after South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) director Mohammed Shameem and Fred Chand secured legal representation.

Wainiqolo noted that the investigation is now being coordinated through the legal counsel of those involved as they work towards facilitating interviews with the promoter. He acknowledged the unforeseen turbulence and emphasized respect for the participants’ right to engage legal representatives. Negotiations regarding interview schedules have been ongoing between the C.O.I and the legal counsel.

From Vancouver, Canada, Shameem stated that he is prepared to participate in the interview but insists that it occurs in the presence of their lawyers, asserting that he has “nothing to hide.” He also expressed frustration over communication issues regarding the scheduling of the interview, as he claims he did not receive prior notices from the C.O.I.

Shameem highlighted concerns regarding the attitude of Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan, who he alleges is attempting to place blame on them. He asserted the importance of a fair hearing, reiterating their intention to fully cooperate. Chand, speaking from Sydney, echoed this sentiment, insisting that they are committed to transparency and have no intention of concluding the inquiry without addressing the matter further.

The C.O.I is also in discussions with the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) over issues related to the fight’s sanctioning. Wainiqolo mentioned challenges presented by the IBO’s position that they cannot be contested in this matter.

The C.O.I has set a 30-day timeline for completing its full report and investigations, which has seen extensions at the request of the minister involved. Wainiqolo stressed the importance of gathering comprehensive information from various parties involved, including ringside doctors, judges, and others connected to the event leading up to Haider’s tragic death.

This ongoing inquiry highlights the complexities surrounding safety and regulations in sports, particularly in boxing, where tragedies can lead to significant questions about oversight and responsibility. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and due process in such investigations.

In summary, while the investigation faces hurdles, the commitment from all parties to ensure a thorough and fair inquiry indicates a focused effort to resolve this troubling incident within the boxing community. The outcome may pave the way for future improvements in safety standards and regulatory frameworks in sports.
