The Commission of Inquiry (C.O.I) is currently facing significant challenges in its investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. Chairman Edwin Wainiqolo disclosed this information during a press conference at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Nadi.
The situation has intensified following the engagement of legal counsel by South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) director Mohammed Shameem and Fred Chand. Wainiqolo acknowledged the unexpected turbulence caused by these developments and emphasized the need to communicate through legal representatives as they work to arrange interviews with the promoter.
Shameem, speaking from Vancouver, expressed a desire to cooperate with the inquiry, indicating readiness to be interviewed but insisting it be conducted in the presence of their lawyers. He stated, “I’ve got nothing to hide,” while expressing concerns over the conduct of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan, who he believes is unfairly placing blame on their organization.
Chand, located in Sydney, echoed Shamim’s sentiments, affirming their commitment to transparency and truthfulness. He highlighted SPBP’s contributions to the local boxing scene, mentioning their dedication to lifting the sport’s profile and supporting boxers through various promotions, even during difficult times post-COVID.
In relation to the International Boxing Organisation (IBO), Wainiqolo noted complications surrounding its sanctioning of the fight, indicating that the C.O.I will be reaching out to the solicitor general for further guidance on these matters. A senior IBO official clarified that although they sanctioned the title fights, the BCF ultimately sanctioned the promotion.
Wainiqolo outlined a 30-day deadline for the completion of reports and investigations, which had been extended at the minister’s request. If the legal representatives fail to respond by the deadline, the inquiry will proceed with the information gathered over the past three weeks.
The investigators aim to compile a comprehensive view involving various individuals linked to the boxing event, including ringside doctors, supervisors, judges, and others in attendance.
In summary, the C.O.I is striving to navigate through unexpected obstacles while ensuring a thorough investigation is conducted into the circumstances surrounding Ubayd Haider’s death. The involvement of legal representation highlights the seriousness of the inquiry and the push for accountability in the boxing community.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of oversight in sports, ensuring that all stakeholders operate with integrity, especially in the wake of tragic incidents. While there are challenges ahead, the commitment of individuals like Wainiqolo, Shameem, and Chand to uphold fairness and transparency offers hope for a resolution that honors Haider’s legacy.
