Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has faced his share of criticism regarding player selection, but he has successfully led the team to impressive results in his inaugural year as a national rugby coach. In 2023, Byrne guided the Flying Fijians to a commendable 70 percent winning record in Test matches—excluding the Barbarians game, which is not classified as a Test match.

For a first-year coach, these results are especially notable, given that only one of the ten Test matches was held at home, with the remaining nine played overseas. Despite a tough 17-52 defeat against Ireland, the Flying Fijians secured seven victories against Tier One teams, scoring a total of 271 points compared to the 261 points conceded.

The results of the Flying Fijians’ matches this season include:

– Fiji 20-12 Georgia
– Fiji 5-47 New Zealand All Blacks
– Fiji 42-16 Samoa
– Fiji 50-19 Tonga
– Fiji 22-3 USA
– Fiji 41-17 Japan
– Fiji 17-57 Scotland
– Fiji 24-19 Wales
– Fiji 33-19 Spain
– Fiji 17-52 Ireland

Upon taking the helm, Byrne identified the challenge of negotiating the release of Europe-based players for national duties—an aspect not encountered during his tenures as assistant coach for Scotland, Australia, and the New Zealand All Blacks.

Throughout the season, Byrne adapted quickly to give both local and overseas players the necessary preparation time. Although there were challenges—such as playing against Scotland without some of his Europe-based players—Byrne used this chance to introduce new talent and provide them with valuable experience.

This season has also been pivotal in transitioning the team, as senior players approach retirement, making way for emerging talent. Byrne is strategically managing these changes to ensure they nurture the team’s winning culture rather than disrupt it.

Notably, he has brought depth to the squad by showcasing rising stars, such as 18-year-old Seta Turagacoke and others like Vuate Karawalevu, Inia Tabuavou, Kitione Salawa, Meli Derenalagi, and Mesake Vocevoce, among others.

Looking ahead to the future, the Flying Fijians end the year on a hopeful note. After a well-deserved break, Byrne and the team are set to concentrate on the upcoming 2025 season, and the prospects for continued success appear promising.

In summary, Mick Byrne has demonstrated resilience and strategic foresight in his first year as head coach, fostering a balance of experienced leadership and fresh talent. As the Flying Fijians move forward, they have the potential to build on their recent successes and strengthen their standing in international rugby.
