Byrne Experimenting with Fiji’s Winning Combinations in PNC

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is exploring all possible combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview, Byrne noted that the interactions between forwards and backs are consistently improving.

“It’s a small squad; 28 isn’t a big number,” he explained. He added that there are enough backs to allow various combinations to be tested without leaving anyone unused.

Byrne remains uncertain about the exact combinations that will emerge as the competition progresses, emphasizing that the team’s development is ongoing. “We’re working through this process, and everyone is getting a chance. It’s not like we have four or five players on the sidelines not being utilized. Everyone is being included in this small squad,” he stated.

Looking ahead to the challenge against Tonga next Friday, Byrne expressed anticipation of the atmosphere. “It’s akin to playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, and Tonga in Tonga. We know the fans in the Pacific Islands are passionate about their home teams,” he remarked. He acknowledged that the match would present pressure, but stressed the importance of staying focused on their objectives, disregarding external distractions.

Meanwhile, burly prop Ben Tameifuna will captain Tonga in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, which is crucial for both teams.

This weekend’s matches include:
– Today: 4pm Samoa vs Tonga
– Sunday: 1pm USA vs Canada

Recent results showed Fiji defeating Samoa 42-16 and Canada losing to Japan 28-55.
