Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has come to the defense of winger Epeli Momo, who has faced criticism from fans on social media regarding his performances with both the Fijian Drua and the national team. Some critics have questioned his inclusion in the starting lineup.

In an interview, Byrne emphasized Momo’s growth as a winger in a short time. He remarked, “What I learned about being in Fiji is that it doesn’t take much for some people to be critics. Those in the rugby community recognize that Momo is giving his all, and we are working diligently with him.”

Previously, Momo played as a flanker during his three-year stint with the French club Montauban in ProD2 from 2020 to 2023. Byrne noted that Momo has made a successful transition from the forwards to the wing position.

“He was playing in the flanks in France, and we provided him the chance to develop as a winger when he joined the Fijian Drua. He has made significant progress in what has been a short time in Fiji, and we fully appreciate what Epeli has contributed to the team,” Byrne stated.

Byrne acknowledged that criticism is inevitable in sports. He said, “Criticism is part of the game, but those around Momo understand how hard he works and what he brings to the team. We fully support him, and there’s no need to judge him after just one game.”

Notably, Momo has been omitted from the Match 23 squad for the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan in Osaka, being replaced by Ilaisa Droasese, with Ponipate Loganimase also named on the bench. Byrne believes Momo is a talented player who can make a strong comeback.

Meanwhile, Flying Fijians captain Tevita Ikanivere expressed confidence in the team ahead of the final against Japan. “The players are clear after two training sessions in Osaka, and we’re excited to take on Japan,” he remarked.

Ikanivere acknowledged the pressure of the match but sees it positively, saying, “We are in a good place, challenging ourselves.” He looks forward to leading the team in his first Pacific Nations Cup final as captain, emphasizing the need to execute the game plan to claim the trophy.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 10:05 PM.
