Beekeeping is set to enhance sustainability within Fiji’s tourism sector, becoming a notable attraction for visitors. Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, addressed this point during the recent launch of the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa’s annual celebration of ‘World Bee Day’ on May 20. The month-long event will feature honey-themed experiences, highlighting the resort’s lush gardens and coastlines which are home to over a million honeybees across 21 active hives.
Hill emphasized that while he cannot guarantee that beekeeping will directly boost tourism, it certainly illustrates a significant advancement in the commitment to sustainability within the industry. He stated, “What it does show is another step forward in our sustainability program, and a real point of interest for tourists.” Beekeeping not only serves as an environmentally beneficial sector but is also believed to contribute positively to local economies.
The Intercontinental Fiji will offer guests a taste of its exclusive honey through various culinary activities held at the Grand Pacific Hotel throughout May. This initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader tourism strategy, which emphasizes sustainable tourism as a means to attract eco-conscious travelers.
Additionally, this celebration links with past initiatives aimed at fostering a responsible tourism model that integrates community interests with environmental conservation. By focusing on such sustainable practices, Fiji’s tourism sector can enhance the visitor experience while still prioritizing environmental stewardship in the face of climate change challenges. The optimism surrounding this initiative points toward the potential for increased interest from travelers seeking authentic and eco-friendly experiences.
