Sanjay Kaba, a well-known businessman and former director of Telecom Fiji Limited, has entered a not guilty plea to charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception at the Suva Magistrates Court. With legal representation from Wasu Pillay, Kaba appeared before Resident Magistrate Krishnan Prasad, who granted him permission to travel abroad from March 1 to March 18, under the condition that he returns to court on March 19. A previously issued stop departure order has been temporarily lifted, enabling Kaba to reclaim his passport from the Court Registry, provided he returns for his court obligations after his trip.
The accusations against Kaba relate to his tenures on the boards of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited from January 27, 2017, to January 20, 2019. He faces allegations of misconduct for submitting a bid through his business, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, for project management services concerning Telecom Fiji’s new office and data center project. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) asserts that Kaba gained over $766,327 between June 2022 and July 2023, while knowing his company was ineligible due to a failure to disclose his directorship.
This case has drawn significant attention as it underscores ongoing initiatives to combat corruption and uphold accountability in Fiji’s corporate governance. The substantial sum involved not only affects Kaba but also raises broader questions about ethical standards expected of individuals in influential roles. The outcome of this trial has the potential to bolster public trust in governance and could set an important precedent regarding transparency and integrity in both governmental and corporate contexts.
As the legal proceedings unfold, there is optimism that this case will enhance ethical standards and encourage a culture of accountability, raising awareness against financial misconduct in the long run. The March 19 court date is anticipated to be a critical juncture in shaping the direction of this important legal affair.
