A businessman has been found guilty of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter over a span of six years. The verdict was delivered by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull at the Suva High Court, where the man faced eight charges of rape. Originally, he was charged with nine counts, but one was dropped due to insufficient evidence.
The complainant had moved to Fiji from the UK with her mother and younger brother in 2008, ultimately living with her stepfather starting in 2010. Ahead of the trial’s continuation, the accused opted to plead guilty to the remaining charges and accepted the summary of facts presented in court.
Following the verdict, Justice Bull revoked the man’s bail and remanded him into custody. The legal representation for the Director of Public Prosecutions included lawyers Shaheen Bibi and Unaisi Ratukalou, while lawyer Gavin O’Driscoll defended the accused. Sentencing and mitigation proceedings are set to begin tomorrow.
This case shines a light on the importance of holding individuals accountable for such heinous acts, offering hope that justice will prevail for victims of sexual violence. The legal system’s response to this situation may encourage other victims to come forward, knowing that their voices can lead to meaningful change.
