A businessman has been convicted of raping his stepdaughter over a span of six years, following a trial at the Suva High Court presided over by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull. The man faced a total of eight charges, reduced from nine after both the prosecution and defense acknowledged insufficient evidence for one of the counts.

The victim, who relocated to Fiji from the UK with her mother and younger brother in 2008, began living with the accused in 2010. As the trial progressed, the defendant opted to plead guilty to the charges. He also accepted the summary of facts presented in court.

In a decisive move, Justice Bull canceled the man’s bail, ordering him to remain in custody. The hearing for sentencing and any potential mitigations is set to start the following day, with legal representatives from the Director of Public Prosecutions and the accused present during proceedings.

This troubling case highlights the serious issues related to family dynamics and abuse, underscoring the importance of legal systems in addressing such heinous acts. By holding offenders accountable, the court aims to provide a semblance of justice for victims, which can encourage others to speak out and seek help.

As the legal process continues, it is hoped that the victim finds support and healing in the aftermath of this distressing chapter of her life.
