Businessman Ajai Punja appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court today to deny charges of unlawful possession of illicit drugs. The case stems from a police raid conducted at his property in Denarau, Nadi, late last month, where authorities discovered both a white substance and dried leaves.
Forensic tests performed on the white substances confirmed that they did not contain illicit drugs, while the dried leaves tested positive for marijuana, leading to the charges against Punja. The court has adjourned the matter until November 21 to set a trial date.
This incident reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Fiji to combat drug-related issues. Authorities have been active in their approach to curb drug offenses, with heightened policing resulting in increased raids and arrests in recent months. The Fiji Police Force emphasizes the importance of community cooperation in their ongoing battle against illegal drug activities.
The proactive measures taken by law enforcement highlight a strong commitment to public safety within the community. With continued vigilance and cooperation from citizens, there is a hopeful outlook for decreasing drug-related incidents in Fiji, fostering safer neighborhoods for all.
In a previous hearing, Punja’s bail was set at $500, demonstrating the legal system’s responsiveness in such cases. As this case unfolds, it will serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by authorities in the fight against drugs, but also of the community’s role in supporting these efforts.
