Prominent businessman Ajai Punja has been released on $500 bail by the Nadi Magistrates Court after being charged with unlawful possession of illicit drugs. The charges stem from a police raid on his residence in Denarau last Friday, during which authorities seized white substances and dried leaves.

Forensic tests conducted on the white substances returned negative results for illicit drugs, while the analysis of the dried leaves confirmed the presence of marijuana. The case has been set for a mention on March 20.

This incident is part of broader efforts by Fijian authorities to combat drug-related activities. The police have ramped up operations to dismantle local drug networks, which have resulted in multiple recent arrests and seizures. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has noted the importance of community cooperation in these initiatives.

Law enforcement’s proactive measures, combined with community vigilance, can lead to a hopeful decline in drug-related incidents. The commitment to maintaining public safety and addressing drug issues reflects a step towards fostering safer communities in Fiji.
