Ajai Kumar Punja, a prominent businessman in Fiji, recently appeared in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court facing charges of unlawful possession of illicit drugs. He was granted bail set at $500, secured by a surety, and is expected to plead on March 20.
The police charged Punja following an incident on February 21, during which he was found with 29.5 grams of cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana. In court, his lawyer, Iqbal Khan, stated that he had received the necessary case disclosures and required additional time to review them before formally responding to the charges.
This incident comes on the heels of a previous raid at Punja’s Denarau property, where authorities discovered various substances. While forensic analysis ruled out some items as illicit, dried leaves confirmed the presence of marijuana. This particular enforcement effort highlights the ongoing commitment of Fijian authorities to combat drug-related offenses and enhance public safety.
The Fiji Police Force continues to actively campaign against illegal drug activities, emphasizing the critical role of community cooperation in maintaining safety. Despite the challenges in drug enforcement, there remains a hopeful outlook for reducing such incidents through persistent vigilance and active community engagement.
