Firefighters have been working relentlessly through the night to safeguard homes from a bushfire that is raging in the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park in Victoria. As of now, there are two emergency warnings in effect for the region, particularly alerting the communities of Pomonal, Moyston, Willaura, Mafeking, and Maroona.
The fire has consumed an astounding 74,000 hectares of bushland, an area beloved by hikers and campers for its stunning rock formations and seasonal floral displays. Luke Heagerty from the State Control Centre highlighted the challenge, noting the flame has expanded significantly from 6,000 hectares just a week ago.
Despite the scale of the fire, officials confirmed that no homes have been lost, although some sheds, camping structures, and outbuildings have been damaged. The current strategy aims to establish containment lines along the active edges of the fire, with hopes of cooler temperatures offering a five-day respite.
In a promising show of support, dozens of emergency service personnel from New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, and Tasmania have flown in to aid efforts, with around 220 staff members at a temporary base camp situated in Ararat.
State Control Centre representative Garry Cook praised the dedication of ground and air crews, who have managed to keep the fire in check, particularly on the eastern front from Pomonal to Glenthompson. He did warn, however, that communities should remain vigilant as conditions can change rapidly.
Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her gratitude toward the firefighting teams for their sacrifices, especially during the holiday season, and stressed the importance of following evacuation instructions and safety guidelines. She acknowledged that while the recent drop in temperature offers a brief relief, the fire is expected to persist for several weeks.
The blaze has disrupted power supply to numerous homes and businesses in Moyston, Willaura, and Pomonal, and the Mt. William communications tower has also been affected, hampering mobile telephone services. Local communities are coming together, offering comfort and support at relief centers, showcasing the resilience and spirit of the people in the face of adversity.
