Police are investigating a bus incident in Dreketilailai, Labasa, where a bus went off a bridge and landed in a river yesterday evening around 5 PM. Authorities confirmed that out of the seven individuals on board, including the driver, one passenger sustained minor injuries and was treated at Labasa Hospital before being discharged.

Community members expressed relief that no students were involved and that serious injuries were avoided. The bus company involved has refrained from commenting, citing the ongoing investigation by law enforcement and the Land Transport Authority.

This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding road travel in Fiji, especially following a series of serious bus-related accidents in recent months. Previously, similar incidents, such as a recent accident in Cuvu, Sigatoka, where injuries were sustained by passengers, have raised alarms about road safety practices.

Authorities are urging all motorists, particularly those operating passenger transport, to prioritize caution while driving to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone on the road. Increasing awareness and enforcement of safety regulations can potentially lead to safer travel experiences for all in the community.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the quick response of rescue services and the avoidance of serious injuries from this incident offer a glimmer of hope for continued improvements in driving practices across Fiji.
