Three passengers from a Pacific Transport bus that veered off the road in Cuvu, Sigatoka, on Friday afternoon are currently recovering at Lautoka Hospital after sustaining serious injuries. According to police spokesperson Wame Bautolu, there were a total of 32 passengers aboard the bus, which was traveling from Nadi to Sigatoka during the incident.

While 29 passengers received treatment for minor injuries and were released, three individuals required more extensive care and have been admitted to the hospital for further treatment. The bus driver has also been discharged but is yet to be interviewed by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the accident’s cause.

This incident highlights the pressing issue of road safety in Fiji, a topic that has gained attention following several bus-related accidents in recent months. For instance, a recent collision involving a minibus and a container truck raised alarms about the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines among Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers. Irimaia Rokosawa, CEO of the Land Transport Authority, emphasized that safety on the roads is crucial and called for greater compliance among drivers to prevent further accidents.

As investigations into this latest accident continue, there is a hope that these incidents will spark improved awareness and enforcement of road safety regulations, ultimately leading to safer travel experiences for all passengers in Fiji. Community members and officials alike remain optimistic that a collective effort towards safer driving practices will reduce the likelihood of future accidents.
