Eighteen individuals received medical treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital following a bus accident in Lautoka yesterday afternoon. The collision took place around 2:45 PM on King’s Road in Vitogo when a four-wheel drive vehicle, which had just exited Vitogo Road, struck the Goundar Shipping bus en route from Lautoka to Ba.
According to police spokesperson Constable Wame Bautolu, the force of the collision caused the bus to overturn onto its side, landing on top of the approaching four-wheel drive vehicle. The driver of the four-wheel drive was trapped inside and required assistance from the National Fire Authority officers to be rescued.
The bus driver, a resident of Saweni, sustained serious injuries but is currently in stable condition. Among the passengers was Abdul Khalik Rahman, who suffered multiple broken ribs; his family, including Aarish and Hafiz Rahman, were at the hospital to support him as he prepared for a CT scan and subsequent admission.
A noticeable police presence was reported at the accident scene as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
