At least 15 individuals sustained injuries when a bus carrying Tongan workers rolled over at Broadlands, located between Rotorua and Taupō. The accident, which occurred just before 7:30 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road, involved only the bus.

By 10 a.m., emergency services airlifted at least 10 of the injured to various hospitals, with three people classified as seriously hurt and two sustaining moderate injuries. Five others experienced minor injuries.

According to Immigration New Zealand’s Pacific manager, Mike Sorensen, the bus was transporting 30 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers who had just arrived in New Zealand and were en route to Hawke’s Bay for employment with Mr Apple. Sorensen confirmed that 13 of the injured individuals were taken to different hospitals, and many are anticipated to be discharged later that day to continue their journey.

Following the incident, 17 workers continued on to Hawke’s Bay. Gary Jones from Mr Apple indicated that 21 workers are expected to arrive in Hawke’s Bay by Sunday evening, where staff will be waiting to provide a warm meal and support services, including a physiotherapist on site.

Jones emphasized a commitment to caring for those affected by ensuring that health services and counselors would be available in the following days. Meanwhile, Sorensen mentioned that Immigration New Zealand would maintain support for those involved in the crash.

The road has been closed for an extended period, with police implementing diversions via Ohaaki Road and Vaile Road. This incident follows a tragic series of events, as it marks the second significant crash involving RSE workers in just three months, with a previous accident in August claiming the lives of three workers on State Highway One near Auckland.

In a time of distress, the quick response from emergency services and the supportive measures being put in place for the workers are commendable, highlighting a community’s ability to come together in times of need. As recovery efforts continue, it’s encouraging to see the focus on the health and well-being of those impacted.

Overall, while the accident is unfortunate, the rapid and compassionate responses from both emergency personnel and the employer offer a glimmer of hope for the injured workers and their families.
