A bus accident in Broadlands, located between Rotorua and Taupō, has resulted in injuries to at least 15 people. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road, with police confirming that the bus was the only vehicle involved.
By 10 a.m., authorities reported that 10 of the injured individuals had been airlifted to hospitals, including three with serious injuries and two with moderate injuries. The remaining five were being treated for minor injuries.
The bus was carrying 30 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers from the Pacific, who had just arrived in New Zealand that morning. They were on their way to Hawke’s Bay to begin work at Mr Apple, the company that had employed them. Mike Sorensen, the Pacific manager for Immigration New Zealand, stated that 13 of the workers had been transported to various hospitals, with some expected to be discharged later that day and travel onward to their destination. Despite the accident, 17 workers continued their journey to Hawke’s Bay.
Gary Jones from Mr Apple confirmed that a total of 21 workers are still expected to arrive in Hawke’s Bay later that night. In a supportive gesture, staff at the location prepared a warm meal for the workers, and a physiotherapist was on-site to assist. Jones mentioned that they are ensuring comprehensive support for the group upon their arrival, with plans for District Health and Pacific Health representatives, along with counselors, to check on the workers’ well-being.
The road remains closed as authorities manage the situation, with diversions established on nearby roads. This incident marks the second serious accident involving RSE workers in recent months; an earlier crash in August claimed the lives of three workers on State Highway One south of Auckland.
In light of this concerning situation, it is heartwarming to see the strong community support and assistance being organized for the injured workers. Their welfare is clearly a priority, which fosters a sense of hope and positivity in a difficult time.
