A bus carrying seasonal Tongan workers rolled over in Broadlands, situated between Rotorua and Taupō, resulting in at least 15 injuries. The incident took place just before 7:30 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Broadlands Road and Allen Road, with no other vehicles involved.
By 10 a.m., emergency services had airlifted at least 10 injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Among them, three were reported to have serious injuries, while two sustained moderate injuries. The remaining five victims were treated for minor injuries.
The bus accommodated 30 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers who had arrived in New Zealand earlier that morning, headed to Hawke’s Bay to commence work with the employer, Mr Apple. Mike Sorensen, the Pacific manager at Immigration New Zealand, confirmed that 13 of the injured workers would be taken to various hospitals, with some expected to be discharged later that day and transported to their work site.
Following the accident, an additional 17 workers from the bus continued their journey to Hawke’s Bay. Gary Jones from Mr Apple stated that, despite the incident, they anticipated that 21 workers would reach their destination on Sunday night. To support the workers, Mr Apple’s staff planned to provide a warm meal upon their arrival, and a physiotherapist was dispatched to assist them.
Jones emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of the workers, with ongoing support planned, including visits from healthcare professionals and counselors.
Sorensen reassured that Immigration New Zealand would provide continual assistance to those affected. Meanwhile, authorities indicated that the road would remain closed for an extended period, with diversions established at Ohaaki Road and Vaile Road.
This unfortunate event follows another serious incident within the last three months, where three RSE workers lost their lives on State Highway One south of Auckland in August.
In summary, while the crash has resulted in injuries, the swift response from emergency services and the support from the employer highlight the community’s commitment to helping those impacted. With ongoing assistance and care planned for the injured workers, there is an encouraging outlook for their recovery.
