Twelve passengers and the driver of a bus from Vishnu Holdings Limited were fortunate to escape without injury after the vehicle left the road at Buca Bay in Cakaudrove on Tuesday afternoon. Shonal Dutt, the company’s general manager, confirmed the incident and attributed it to the deteriorating road conditions in the area.

“It was nothing serious, and no one was injured. The bus went off the road due to poor conditions,” Mr. Dutt stated. A replacement bus arrived within 30 minutes to ensure the passengers could complete their journey.

Mr. Dutt expressed ongoing concerns regarding the maintenance of the road at Buca Bay, remarking that despite temporary repairs made by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), the condition of the road continues to worsen. He noted that saltwater from the sea further aggravates these issues.

Despite the obstacles, Vishnu Holdings remains committed to servicing the route. Mr. Dutt urged the FRA to take more effective action to address road maintenance and emphasized the need for government support in ensuring bus routes are safe and well-maintained. He expressed frustration over the allocation of road levies, given the persistent poor state of many roads.

In past public consultations with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the company has raised these concerns, but Mr. Dutt indicated that many remain unaddressed. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa recently highlighted the importance of collaboration with transport providers to effectively tackle these challenges.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of infrastructure maintenance for public safety. Continued advocacy for improved road conditions and cooperation among transport authorities may lead to positive changes in the future, ensuring safer travel for all.

Summary: A bus incident at Buca Bay resulted in no injuries, with passengers safely transferred. The company calls for better road maintenance, highlighting ongoing issues with deteriorating conditions and saltwater intrusion. LTA emphasizes collaboration with transport providers for effective solutions.
