Eighteen individuals received medical treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital following a collision between a bus and a four-wheel drive vehicle in Lautoka yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred around 2:45 PM on King’s Road, in Vitogo, Lautoka.
According to police spokesperson Constable Wame Bautolu, the four-wheel drive vehicle pulled out of Vitogo Road and struck the Goundar Shipping bus, which was en route from Lautoka to Ba. The force of the collision caused the bus to overturn and it ended up on its side, resting on the oncoming four-wheel drive vehicle.
The driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle became trapped inside and needed to be rescued by officers from the National Fire Authority. The bus driver, who lives in Saweni, suffered serious injuries but is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Family members of passengers were spotted outside the hospital, providing comfort to those affected. Aarish Rahman informed that his uncle, Abdul Khalik Rahman, who was a passenger, had sustained four broken ribs and would need to undergo a CT scan before being admitted for further treatment.
At the time of reporting, a heavy police presence was noted at the scene as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
