Eighteen individuals received medical attention at Lautoka Aspen Hospital following a bus accident involving a four-wheel drive vehicle in Lautoka yesterday afternoon. The collision occurred around 2:45 PM along King’s Road in Vitogo, Lautoka.

According to police spokesperson Constable Wame Bautolu, the four-wheel drive vehicle pulled out of Vitogo Road and struck the Goundar Shipping bus, which was en route from Lautoka to Ba. The impact caused the bus to overturn, landing on its side and coming to rest on top of the oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the four-wheel drive was trapped inside and had to be rescued by firefighters. The bus driver, a resident of Saweni, suffered serious injuries but is now reported to be in stable condition. Passengers were traveling to Ellington Wharf for a 6 PM inter-island vessel heading to Vanua Levu.

Family members became concerned for their uncle, Abdul Khalik Rahman, who was a passenger on the bus. Aarish Rahman relayed that doctors indicated his uncle would undergo a CT scan after sustaining four broken ribs and would be admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

As of last night, a heavy police presence was noted in the area as investigations into the incident are ongoing.

This accident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving, particularly at intersections. The swift response from emergency services and the medical staff at Lautoka Aspen Hospital highlights the readiness of local authorities to handle such critical situations effectively.
