A juvenile and two men are set to appear in the Magistrates Court in Labasa today, facing multiple charges related to burglary and aggravated robbery. Their alleged criminal activities took place over a span of several weeks, with break-ins occurring between December 5 and December 31, 2024.

The first incident reported on December 5 involves the burglary of a 43-year-old self-employed man’s home in Bocalevu, Labasa, while he was away in town with his family. The thieves reportedly stole items valued at $1,104, including 5 kilograms of Yagona, mats, and bags.

Just a day later, on December 6, the group allegedly targeted a 50-year-old farmer’s home in Vuniqari, Tabia, stealing a staggering $18,894 worth of items, which included jewelry, clothing, mobile phones, and perfumes, while the farmer was attending a wedding.

On December 13, they struck again, this time robbing a 43-year-old self-employed woman in Bocalevu during her absence due to another wedding function, taking goods valued at $3,217 from her shop.

A more alarming incident occurred on December 20, when the trio threatened a 60-year-old woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter in Vunidova with a cane knife. They unlawfully seized items worth $6,372 from the frightened victims.

The series of burglaries culminated on December 31 with the breaking into the home of a 54-year-old farmer in Bocalevu. The family was asleep during the incident, and upon waking, they discovered that louver blades had been removed, leading to the theft of items worth approximately $1,817.

These events highlight a troubling rise in criminal activity, but they also emphasize the resilience of the community as they seek justice. The upcoming court proceedings will not only bring accountability for the victims but may also serve as a deterrent to future criminal acts, ensuring that community safety is prioritized.
