A juvenile and two men are set to appear in the Magistrates Court in Labasa today, facing multiple charges of burglary and aggravated robbery. Their alleged criminal activities took place over several weeks, resulting in a series of house break-ins across Labasa from December 5 to December 31, 2024.
The trio is accused of breaking into the home of a 43-year-old self-employed man in Bocalevu on December 5, in which they reportedly stole items worth $1,104, including 5kg of Yagona, mats, and bags, while the homeowner was away in town with family. The next day, they allegedly targeted a 50-year-old farmer in Vuniqari, Tabia, stealing valuables totaling around $18,894, which included jewelry, clothing, mobile phones, and perfumes, while the family attended a wedding.
On December 13, the group reportedly broke into the home of a 43-year-old self-employed woman in Bocalevu, stealing shop items valued at $3,217 as she was preoccupied with family wedding festivities. A few days later, on December 20, they allegedly threatened a 60-year-old woman and her two-year-old granddaughter with a cane knife and stole items worth $6,372 from her residence in Vunidova.
The final alleged break-in occurred on December 31, when the individuals reportedly entered the home of a 54-year-old farmer in Bocalevu while the family was asleep. They were discovered after the family noticed the louver blades removed, with approximately $1,817 worth of belongings missing.
This situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety and property crimes within the community. Law enforcement agencies are urged to strengthen their preventative measures to protect residents from such distressing incidents.
