In response to a tragic fire incident in Meigunyeh, Nadi, which resulted in the loss of three lives, the National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a strong warning to homeowners regarding fire safety. The fire, believed to have been exacerbated by combustible materials in a fuel room, severely hindered escape routes due to secure burglar grills that were installed in the residence.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane emphasized the dual purpose of burglar grills, which are typically installed for protection against theft but can impede quick exits during emergencies. He highlighted that the intense fuel load within the home contributed to the rapid spread of the fire as well as the thick smoke that obstructed visibility. “While burglar grills are designed to keep out intruders, in emergencies, they can trap individuals indoors and diminish their chances of survival,” Sowane warned.
To prevent such tragedies, Sowane advised homeowners to implement easy-to-open mechanisms for their grills to facilitate swift evacuations during fires. He also raised concerns regarding another pressing issue—cane field fires in the Western Division—that can escalate into larger disasters, especially under dry weather conditions.
“In seconds, fires can spread,” he stated. “Being prepared and knowing how to respond can make the difference between life and loss.”
This warning follows a worrying uptick in residential fires, including recent incidents that have caused substantial property damage and raised alarms about the need for vigilant fire safety practices among homeowners. The NFA has repeatedly urged the public to check their homes for fire hazards, ensure that electrical appliances are turned off when not in use, and store flammable materials safely.
The ongoing outreach efforts by the NFA aim to cultivate a culture of fire safety awareness among Fijians, emphasizing that proactive measures can save lives and protect property. While recent fires have underscored the ongoing risks, the commitment to education and community involvement fosters hope that increased awareness will lead to improved safety standards and reduced fire incidents in the future.
