Burerua Water Project Brings Clean Water to Tailevu, Fiji

Burerua Village in Sawakasa, Tailevu, has reached a significant turning point with the inauguration of the Burerua Water Project, which now provides clean and reliable water to local households. The project, celebrated during a community gathering, was officially opened by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Funded through the Office of the Prime Minister’s Small Grants Scheme at a cost of $37,493.50, the initiative delivers safe drinking water directly to homes, ending years of dependence on the nearby river for essential daily needs.

During his address to the community, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed heartfelt congratulations to the people of Burerua for their unwavering commitment to turning this long-awaited dream into a reality. He highlighted that the project serves as a reminder of the success that can be achieved when government agencies and communities collaborate with a shared vision for progress.

Seru Soderberg, CEO of the Water Authority of Fiji, underscored the project’s alignment with the government’s broader strategy to expand access to clean water for all Fijians. He also reassured residents that similar initiatives would soon benefit other communities across the nation.

For many residents, including Miriama Masitabua of the Burerua Women’s Group, the launch of this project stands as a deeply personal triumph. Masitabua recounted the challenges of retrieving water from the river in less-than-ideal weather conditions, expressing her sense of relief and gratitude for the newfound access to safe water.

This development highlights the capacity of collective effort and community spirit in effecting positive change in rural areas. As clean water begins to flow through the village, Burerua stands as a promising example of how infrastructure improvements can dramatically elevate living standards, promote better health outcomes, and foster vibrant communities across Fiji.

Similar projects launched elsewhere, such as the recent water initiative in Vusama and Navisabasaba, also signify the government’s ongoing commitment to enhance water accessibility in rural regions. These efforts, which have transformed the lives of numerous communities, paint a hopeful picture for more locations in Fiji, where clean and safe water is increasingly becoming a reality, paving the way for healthier and more prosperous futures for all residents.
