Buna's Dubai debut sparks Fiji 7s optimism ahead of Paradise Sevens

Buna’s Dubai debut sparks Fiji 7s optimism ahead of Paradise Sevens

Former Fijiana 15s and Fijian Drua women’s representative Atelaite Buna has successfully transitioned to the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, showcasing her talent and determination. After narrowly missing out on selection for the 15s World Cup, Buna has found a renewed sense of purpose on the 7s circuit.

Her debut in the Dubai 7s was nothing short of impressive, where she scored a remarkable 70-meter try, catching the attention of fans and selectors alike. Coach Richard Walker’s confidence in Buna has been evident, as he praised her rapid development and contribution to the squad. Walker noted that with some spaces available in the team to prepare for the Paradise Sevens, they were able to bring in players like Buna, who had been just outside the World Cup squad.

“Yeah, it’s been really good. We had some spaces available in camp to get ready for Paradise Sevens, and she was just on the fringe of making that World Cup squad,” Walker explained. He highlighted that Buna’s inclusion had sparked healthy competition within the team.

“Ever since she’s come in, she’s been nothing but going up, up, up. Really learning, really positive energy. We’re really excited to have her; she’s starting to feel really comfortable,” he added, expressing high hopes for her performance in the upcoming matches.

The Fijiana’s journey continues as they faced off against the USA in their first pool match, followed by encounters with Great Britain and New Zealand. With players like Buna stepping up, there is a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the team’s future performances in the tournament.
