The Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) at Queen Victoria School in Tailevu has taken a strong stance against bullying within the school. Association president Nemani Tuifagalele emphasized that the issue has escalated, and they are currently waiting for a report from the principal before proceeding with actions.
Mr. Tuifagalele expressed his belief that bullying is an ongoing challenge at the school, stating that it is unacceptable at any level. He acknowledged that similar incidents have occurred in the past and reiterated the importance of viewing the situation from different angles, especially considering the school is a boarding institution.
He pointed out that what may be deemed bullying or assault by outsiders may be perceived differently by students, but noted that such behavior crosses a line when it results in harm. Mr. Tuifagalele affirmed the PTA’s commitment to addressing bullying by regularly reminding students about its consequences.
In light of recent events, the PTA, along with the school’s Board of Governors, is in the process of developing an anti-bullying policy. This policy includes proposals such as the “Find Another School” concept for students found to be involved in bullying behavior. However, he raised concerns regarding the potential long-term impact on younger students who may become perpetrators.
Mr. Tuifagalele mentioned that he learned about the situation on Sunday and that it is being jointly addressed by the school, the PTA, and the Board of Governors. He also indicated that involvement from law enforcement changes the context of the situation significantly, stating it is an unacceptable scenario that will be thoroughly investigated.
