The Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, has called for immediate action in response to troubling reports of bullying and illegal activities at Queen Victoria School (QVS). Allegations indicate that orderlies from Rewa House have been coerced by senior students, labeled as ‘gangsters’, to steal 12 loaves of bread each morning during breakfast. These loaves are then provided to senior boys who purposely avoid eating in the school’s main hall.

Additionally, these senior students are accused of utilizing orderlies to transport forbidden items such as marijuana, premix alcohol, and cigarettes. Reports suggest these items are hidden within the school and collected after lights out, around 11:30 PM.

In her response, Ms. Tabuya emphasized the necessity for broader intervention, acknowledging that the Ministry of Education is responsible for managing student behavior but that the current situation requires action beyond the school’s administration. “It’s crucial not only to address the needs of those being bullied but also those responsible for the bullying,” she stated, noting the pressing need to confront the prevailing culture of intimidation at QVS. To aid in addressing these issues, she has reached out to Inspire Pacific, an organization focused on combating bullying.

Meanwhile, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has acknowledged the serious allegations circulating on social media, including claims of drug use among students. He affirmed that the ministry would conduct a thorough investigation into the use of illegal substances on school grounds, pledging to hold those accountable who are found responsible.

As the investigation unfolds, there is increasing demand for authorities to take firm actions to eradicate the bullying culture and restore a safe environment at Queen Victoria School.

In light of these serious allegations, it is essential for the educational authorities and community stakeholders to work together to promote a more supportive and safe school environment. With proactive responses and community engagement, there is hope for positive change that addresses both the needs of victims and the behavior of perpetrators.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and comprehensive measures to ensure a nurturing atmosphere in educational institutions.
