Allegations of bullying and illicit drug use have once again come to light at one of the country’s premier boys’ schools, Queen Victoria School (QVS). These disturbing claims were made public through a handwritten letter that surfaced on Facebook over the weekend.

While the school’s management has opted for silence, prominent old boys, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, have urged for a thorough investigation into the situation. The allegations describe a troubling environment where some senior students are accused of forcing junior peers, particularly kitchen staff, to engage in stealing food and participating in illegal activities, including serving as lookouts during drug transactions and monetary thefts, as well as enduring physical abuse.

Prime Minister Rabuka commented that he trusts the Minister for Education is aware of the situation and will address the necessary disciplinary measures concerning the school, particularly given that corporal punishment is not tolerated. Minister Vosarogo has called for an open dialogue among stakeholders at QVS to address the issues head-on and restore the school’s reputation for nurturing quality leadership.

The allegations have reignited discussions on the school’s policies regarding bullying and whether effective measures are in place to combat such behaviors. Minister Vosarogo emphasized that immediate action is needed to rectify the perceived decline in the school’s standards over recent decades, suggesting that a failure to reinforce a positive school culture has contributed to current problems.

School principal Timoci Vosailagi declined to comment when approached. Meanwhile, the president of the QVS Parents and Teachers Association, Nemani Tuifagalele, expressed his concern and is awaiting the outcomes of the Ministry of Education’s investigation.

While the current situation highlights serious issues within the school, the proactive response from alumni and government officials demonstrates a shared commitment to restoring a safe and nurturing environment for students. With collaborative efforts focused on dialogue and reform, there is hope that QVS can reclaim its legacy as a leading institution that fosters future leaders.

In summary, this situation calls for decisive and united action, and it is heartening to witness community leaders stepping forward to facilitate change and ensure the well-being of all students.
